Abstract

The sacred is one of the most fundamental and problematic of Eliade's categories for understanding and explicating the phenomena and the history of religion. It is fundamental because to the sacred almost all his other categories are described; and it is problematic even controversial in terms of Eliade’s notion of the nature and the status of the sacred. In his studies on the sacred, Eliade goes into a dualistic mode of thinking and treats the sacred as the real while the profan as illusory one. However, there is a problem with Eliade's presuppositions on the sacred and profane in which it is difficult to determine whether he claims the objects belonging to the sphere of the profane actually exist or not. Due to such a difficulty, Lonergan notion on the sacred and the profane is needed to be a way of working out the problem.
