Abstract

In socio-economic horizons, the life of the Komoro-Sempan people in the village of Otakwa is food-gatherer. The society is mainly characterized by consumptive attitude that foods gathered today are consumed immediately. People base their lives on the abundance of natural resources by hunting animals such as fish, crab, shellfish, or by gathering wild plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts and so on. Actually, these natural resources could be sold in the city of Timika, the only downtown in that area, but the people face another difficult due to the transportation to the city which reversely brings about costly life in the village.
Basically, people of Otakwa are very enthusiastic to the economic program of Furnace of Life Movement, particularly of the trainings such as net-making, fish-smoking and money-saving. That program is very important for increasing the growth of economic welfare of the people in the coastal area of Mimika. In this case, the employees of Koperasi Maria Bintang Laut and PT. Freeport Indonesia need to pay much attention to the anthropological and sociological aspects of the people of Komoro-Sempan in order to avoid clashes between the program and the local culture of the people.
